Most families don’t arrive knowing the vocabulary — they just know Mom is struggling with something. These are the arrangements local agencies offer, in plain language.
Company and a watchful presence: conversation, errands, rides to appointments, help with mail and meals, and someone who notices when something seems off. Often the first step families take.
Hands-on help with bathing, dressing, grooming, getting around the house safely, and medication reminders — usually provided by trained aides (CNAs and home health aides).
A caregiver who lives in the home, so your parent is rarely alone — a common choice when nights are the worry, or when hourly care around the clock would cost more.
Caregivers working in rotating shifts so someone is awake and available at any hour. Typically for parents who need help overnight as much as during the day.
Short-term help that gives a family caregiver time to rest, travel, or handle life — a few days or a few weeks of cover so care doesn’t depend on one exhausted person.
The daily basics that keep a household running: light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, groceries, and check-ins — the support that lets a parent stay independent longer.

Home care is non-medical help at home — companionship, bathing, dressing, meals, housekeeping, rides. Home health care is skilled medical care at home (nursing, wound care, therapy), usually ordered by a doctor after a hospital stay or diagnosis. Many families use both at different times.
It depends mostly on how many hours of help your parent needs and the type of care. A few hours a week of companion care and full-time or live-in care are very different budgets. Any agency should give you a written rate sheet and explain what is included before you sign anything — our questions guide covers what to request.
Often within days once an agency has met your parent and assessed what they need. If the situation is urgent — a hospital discharge, a fall — say so when you reach out and we will point you to who to call first.
