Bathroom Safety

The bathroom is where most home falls happen — hard surfaces, water, and nothing to hold. These are the products families buy to change that, organised by the job they do.

How this shelf is organised: by the moment that worries you. Getting into the tub, sitting in the shower, rising from the toilet, or reaching the bathroom at night — each guide below starts from one of those moments and compares the products that address it, on the manufacturer's own specifications.

Everything here is non-powered, buy-it-and-fit-it equipment from one approved partner, Vive Health. Where a product has a real limitation — and they all do — the card says so. If a bar needs studs, a bench needs floor space, or a commode needs someone to empty it, that is printed before the buy button, not after.

Every recommendation here is chosen because we believe it can help — never because of a payment. Some recommendations use affiliate links — if you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We count recommendation clicks to understand what's useful. See our Privacy Policy.

Sold by Vive Health

Shower Chair

$69.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Single price.

From the manufacturer

A wide, self-draining seat for showering seated, with nonslip leg caps and an adjustable-height, corrosion-resistant frame.

  • Supports up to 300 lb (Vive)
  • Seat 15.75″ × 13″, lightly textured with drainage holes
  • Adjustable seat height
  • Nonslip leg caps

Our guidance

The default starting point for most families: a full-size seat with a back, sized for a standard tub or shower stall. Measure the tub floor width before ordering — the legs need to sit flat inside it.

Limitations: A chair only helps if your parent will sit down before stepping in and stand up after stepping out — it does not make the step over the tub wall itself safer. Assembly required.

Metal Grab Bar

$17.99 – $42.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Price varies by bar length.

From the manufacturer

A stainless-steel grab bar that screws into the wall and can be mounted vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

  • Supports up to 440 lb when correctly installed (Vive)
  • Stainless steel
  • Lengths priced from $17.99 to $42.99
  • Brushed nickel, white, or bronze satin finishes

Our guidance

The workhorse bar. For most bathrooms: one vertical bar at the tub entry, one horizontal along the tub wall, one near the toilet. Length matters less than placement — put bars where hands actually reach while standing up.

Limitations: Only as strong as its mounting: bars must be screwed into studs or proper anchors — a bar screwed into drywall alone can pull out. If nobody at home can find studs and drill, this is a small handyman job, not a DIY afternoon.

Toilet Seat Riser with Arms

$79.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Single price.

From the manufacturer

A riser that adds 3.5 inches of height under the toilet seat, with padded, removable handles for pushing up.

  • Adds 3.5″ of seat height (Vive)
  • Supports up to 300 lb (Vive)
  • Padded removable handles
  • Crack-resistant composite

Our guidance

The balanced pick when sitting down has become a drop and standing up has become a rock-and-push: moderate lift plus something solid to push on. Try this height first — more lift is not always better (see limitations).

Limitations: Too much seat height leaves feet dangling, which is its own balance problem — feet should stay flat on the floor. Fit varies by toilet shape; measure your parent's toilet (round vs. elongated) before ordering.

Tub Transfer Bench

$119.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Single price — note: seen at $109.99 in an earlier same-week check; Vive prices move, which is why every price here is date-stamped.

From the manufacturer

A long bench that straddles the tub wall: sit down outside the tub, slide across, and shower seated. Reversible back and armrest; suction-cup feet on the inside legs.

  • Supports up to 400 lb (Vive)
  • Reversible backrest and armrest
  • Non-slip suction cups on interior feet
  • Tool-free assembly

Our guidance

The single most useful purchase when stepping over the tub wall has become the dangerous moment. Your parent never has to stand in the tub or lift a leg over the edge while standing.

Limitations: Takes up real space — one end sits outside the tub, so a small bathroom may not fit it. The shower curtain must close inside the bench or water escapes onto the floor. Does not fit every tub shape (very narrow or corner tubs can be a problem).
