Bathroom Safety — Buying Guide

Tub Transfer Benches: The Safer Way In and Out of the Bathtub

Every other seat in the bathroom assumes your parent can get into the tub. When that step itself becomes the risk, the bench is the product designed for exactly that moment.

Short answer: a transfer bench straddles the tub wall — two legs inside the tub, two outside — so your parent sits down on dry floor, swings their legs over one at a time while seated, and slides across into the shower area. At no point do they stand in the tub or balance on one leg at the wall. For most families facing the tub-step problem, this is the purchase, and Vive's bench below is the straightforward version of it.

It is not the only shape the answer takes. A sliding shower chair does the same job in less floor space, and if your parent still steps in confidently but finds the wall high, a bath step plus a fixed grab bar may be all that's needed. The honest differences are below.

The products in detail

Sold by Vive Health

Tub Transfer Bench

$119.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Single price — note: seen at $109.99 in an earlier same-week check; Vive prices move, which is why every price here is date-stamped.

From the manufacturer

A long bench that straddles the tub wall: sit down outside the tub, slide across, and shower seated. Reversible back and armrest; suction-cup feet on the inside legs.

  • Supports up to 400 lb (Vive)
  • Reversible backrest and armrest
  • Non-slip suction cups on interior feet
  • Tool-free assembly

Our guidance

The single most useful purchase when stepping over the tub wall has become the dangerous moment. Your parent never has to stand in the tub or lift a leg over the edge while standing.

Limitations: Takes up real space — one end sits outside the tub, so a small bathroom may not fit it. The shower curtain must close inside the bench or water escapes onto the floor. Does not fit every tub shape (very narrow or corner tubs can be a problem).

Sliding Shower Chair

$159.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Single price.

From the manufacturer

A shower chair with a sliding, locking seat on a frame that lets the user move from outside the tub into the shower area.

  • Supports up to 300 lb (Vive)
  • Sliding seat with secure locking feature
  • Lightweight aluminum frame

Our guidance

The closest thing to a transfer bench with a chair's support: useful when stepping over the tub wall is no longer realistic but a full bench feels like too much equipment.

Limitations: Costs the most of the seated options here and takes the most tub space. The slide must be locked before and after moving — not a one-handed operation for someone with very weak grip.

Bath Step

$59.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Single price.

From the manufacturer

A stable, textured 4-inch step that halves the climb over the tub wall, with a wide 19″ × 16.5″ surface.

  • Supports up to 400 lb (Vive)
  • 4″ high; 19″ × 16.5″ top surface
  • Textured non-slip surface

Our guidance

For the parent who still steps into the tub but finds the wall height the hard part — one 4-inch step instead of one tall one. Also useful at a high bed or kitchen shelf with a handhold nearby.

Limitations: A step is still a step: it needs a handhold next to it (a rail or bar) to do its job, and it should live on a dry, level floor — not inside the tub.

Shower Chair

$69.99Seller's price — checked Nov 7, 2026 on vivehealth.com. Single price.

From the manufacturer

A wide, self-draining seat for showering seated, with nonslip leg caps and an adjustable-height, corrosion-resistant frame.

  • Supports up to 300 lb (Vive)
  • Seat 15.75″ × 13″, lightly textured with drainage holes
  • Adjustable seat height
  • Nonslip leg caps

Our guidance

The default starting point for most families: a full-size seat with a back, sized for a standard tub or shower stall. Measure the tub floor width before ordering — the legs need to sit flat inside it.

Limitations: A chair only helps if your parent will sit down before stepping in and stand up after stepping out — it does not make the step over the tub wall itself safer. Assembly required.

What none of these do

No bench makes a parent who cannot sit up unsupported safe in a tub — that needs hands-on help and a different conversation. No bench fits every tub, and none keeps water in by itself: plan the curtain around it. And a bench does not shorten a long recovery — it is typically one piece of a post-surgery setup that also includes a raised toilet seat and a walker for the first weeks.
